Maple & Brown Sugar Porridge (with Black Garlic!)

Amp up the nutritional profile and flavor of a breakfast classic with this black garlic porridge. Black garlic lends a sultry sweetness that is beautifully complimented by the timeless combo of maple and brown sugar.

This simple, ready-in-15-minutes breakfast is sure to break anyone out of that all too familiar boring morning meal rut. Fast enough for busy weekday mornings, yet fun and unusual enough for special gatherings, we think you’ll love this warming bowl of hot cereal as much as our family does!

Prep Time: 5 minutes | Cook Time: 10 minutes | Total Time: 15 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

  • 3 cups water

  • 1/4 teaspoon black garlic salt

  • 1 cup hot cereal (we like Bob’s Red Mill 7 Grain Hot Cereal)

  • 4-8 cloves black garlic, peeled and smashed into a thick puree (roughly 2-3 tablespoons)

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

TOPPINGS IDEAS:

Consider a pat of butter, milk, raisins, chopped nuts, or an additional sprinkle of brown sugar

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. In a medium saucepan, bring water and salt to a boil.

  2. Stir in cereal and reduce heat to maintain a low simmer. Add black garlic puree and stir until incorporated.

  3. Cook over medium-low for ten minutes, stirring occasionally. Adjust heat as needed to prevent cereal from sticking to pan.

  4. Remove from heat and stir in brown sugar, maple syrup, and vanilla extract. Portion into bowls, add toppings, and serve.

NOTES:

Any kind of hot cereal can be used, just be sure to adjust cook time and water amount to suit the specific kind accordingly.
