Garam Masala Lamb Burgers

Garam Masala Lamb Burgers

The distinct flavor of lamb combines beautifully with garam masala, an aromatic spice blend common in Indian cuisine. We also love the veggies that are added to the meat mixture for an extra flavor and nutrient boost.

This is another recipe where we took some serious inspiration from Kanchan Koya, @chiefspicemama extraordinaire. We love topping our burgers with roasted onion rings (instructions below), and they finish in about the time it takes to prep and cook the burgers.

Servings: 4

Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 20 minutes | Total Time: 40 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

For the roasted onion rings |

For the burgers |

  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil, divided

  • 1/4 cup diced yellow onion

  • 1/4 cup diced carrot

  • 1 heaping tablespoon minced garlic

  • 1 pound ground lamb

  • 2 teaspoons garam masala

  • 1 teaspoon Smoked Garlic Artisanal Salt

  • freshly ground black pepper, to taste

TOPPINGS IDEAS:

roasted onion rings, Orie’s Farmhouse Greens, Sliced Tomato (necessary if they’re in season), pepper jack cheese, mayo, ketchup, and mustard

INSTRUCTIONS:

For the roasted onion rings |

  1. Preheat oven to 400F. On a large rimmed baking sheet, scatter onion rings and drizzle over oil. Toss to coat, spread in an even layer, and roast in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.

  2. Remove baking sheet from oven, flip the onion rings, and roast for 10 to 15 minutes more. Keep a close eye on them toward the end so they don’t burn. Remove from oven and set aside until it’s time to assemble burgers.

For the burgers |

  1. While the onion rings are roasting, preheat a large skillet on the stovetop over medium-low heat and add 1 tablespoon avocado oil.

  2. Once the oil is hot, add the diced onion and carrot and cook for about 4-5 minutes or until tender. Stir in minced garlic and cook for one minute more, until fragrant. Remove from the heat.

  3. Scrap the onion-carrot-garlic mixture out into a large mixing bowl. Add the lamb, garam masala, salt, and pepper. Mix everything together and form into four patties.

  4. To cook the burgers on the stovetop, add the remaining tablespoon of oil to the same skillet and heat over medium. When hot, add patties and cook for about 5 minutes per side. Alternatively, the burger patties can be grilled over hot coals. We find the cook time to be about the same as cooking inside on the skillet.

  5. Assemble burgers with your favorite toppings and serve. We enjoy these with our Curried Potato Wedges or with raw carrot sticks.
